How ChatGPT decides which businesses to recommend (and how to be one of them)

We analysed thousands of ChatGPT responses to understand the signals that drive business recommendations.

The black box problem

When ChatGPT recommends a business, it does not explain why. The recommendation appears as natural language, as if a knowledgeable friend is giving you advice. Through systematic testing we have developed a clear picture of the signals that drive ChatGPT business recommendations.

What ChatGPT is actually doing

ChatGPT generates text based on patterns learned during training. When you ask it to recommend a business, it is not performing a live search. It draws on a snapshot of the internet from its training cutoff. Businesses with strong online presences before that cutoff are well-represented.

The five signals that drive ChatGPT recommendations

1. Training data volume

The more your business has been mentioned and written about online, the more likely ChatGPT is to be aware of it. Businesses with high training data volume have active press coverage, forum discussions on Reddit and Quora, review platform presence on Trustpilot and Google Reviews, and active social media engagement.

2. Consistent entity signals

If your business name, description, and category are described inconsistently across the web, the model struggles to form a coherent picture. Common mistakes include using different versions of your business name and describing your services differently on different platforms.

3. Category association

ChatGPT recommends businesses that are clearly associated with specific categories. Use clear, consistent category language across all your content and be listed in category-specific directories.

4. Reputation signals

ChatGPT is sensitive to sentiment. Businesses with patterns of negative coverage are less likely to be recommended. Actively generating positive reviews and coverage is essential.

5. Geographic signals

For local business queries, ChatGPT uses geographic signals from your Google Business Profile, local directory listings, local press coverage, and content that mentions your location.

How to apply this

Get covered in industry publications and local press. Build a strong review presence on multiple platforms. Ensure all directory listings are accurate and consistent. Create content that answers the questions your customers ask. Build genuine backlinks from authoritative sources in your industry.

The ChatGPT-specific opportunity

ChatGPT is particularly responsive to structured, authoritative content. Long-form guides, original research, and definitive resources tend to perform well. If your business can produce content that becomes the go-to resource in your niche, that content will be well-represented in ChatGPT responses. The results compound over time in a way that shortcuts do not.
